Charles Samuel (junior) was born in 1883 in Nottingham and was the son of Charles Samuel (senior) a printer and compositer and Susan Turton nee Champelovier, of 55, Broad Oak St., Nottingham, His father Charles Samuel was born in 1860 in Nottingham and his mother Susan Champelovier was born in 1863 also in Nottingham, they had the following children :- Arthur Harry,Florence E, Frederick William, Sarah Helen,John and Harold In the 1901 census the family are living at 44 Corporation Road, Nottingham Charles Samuel (junior) married his wife Fanny Elizabeth Smith (b 1887 Nottingham) in 1907 in Nottingham. In the 1911 census Charles Samuel (Junior) is living at 52 Broad Oak Street, Nottingham , he is shown as 27 yrs , head of the family a bobbin and carriage hand in the lace industry, he is living with his wife Fanny Elizabeth 24 yrs a machinist and their daughter Ida Millicent 2yrs , also living with them is Susan Champolvier 73 yrs a widow shown as a boarder.
Lance Corporal Charles Samuel Turton, enlisted in Nottingham and served with 2/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles), was killed in action on 2nd April 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
His brother, Private John Turton served with the 1/4th Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and died of wounds on 13 April 1918. Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 2nd April 1918 :- “TURTON. – In loving memory of Charlie, beloved husband of Fanny, 94 Hunger Hill Road, killed April 2nd, 1917; also his brother John, killed April [sic] 13th, 1918. Cherished memories. – Sorrowing wife and children, Ida and [illegible]. “TURTON. – In loving remembrance of our dear son and brother, Lance-Cpl. Charles Samuel Turton, 2/7 Robin Hoods, presumed killed April 2nd, 1917.
