John was the only surviving son of John and Rose Stoneystreet (nee Smith). John (b. abt. 1853, Nottingham) and Rose (b. abt. 1855 Worksop) were married in 1872 (J/A/S Nottingham). According to the 1911 Census, when they had been married for 39 years, they had had 12 children of whom only three survived; Eliza (b. abt. 1872), May Elsie b. 1895 (O/N/D Nottingham) and John (b. 1898 (J/A/S Nottingham). In 1881 John (28) a labourer, and Rose (26) a lace dresser, were living at 21 Commerce Street, Nottingham, with a daughter named Eliza (8). John and Rose were still living at the same address at the time of the 1891 Census and now had four children; Eliza (18) a lace dresser) Harriett (9), Sarah (5) and John (8 months). John died two years later in 1893 (O/N/D Nottingham) at the age of 3 years. By 1901 the family had moved to 8 Heath Terrace, Lotus Street, St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham. John Stoneystreet (48) was still working as a labourer and Rose (46) was still a lace hand (at home). Their daughter Eliza (28) was a lace cutter, Harriett (18) a lace hand and Sarah (14) a cigar maker. They also had two other children born since the previous census; May Elsie (5) and John (2). Two of the siblings, Harriett and Sarah, died in the next few years, Harriett at the age of 21 in 1903 (A/M/J Nottingham) and Sarah at the age of 19 in 1905 (A/M/J Nottingham). John and Rose were still at 8 Heath Terrace in 1911. Also in the household were their three surviving children; Eliza (38) a lace dresser, May Elsie (15) a hosiery hand, and John (12) who was still at school. They also had a grandson living with them, George Albert Stoneystreet age 6 (b. 1905 A/M/J Nottingham). Rose Stoneystreet died aged 56 in 1911 (J/A/S Nottingham). When John attested in March 1915 he was living with his widowed father at 6 Swanwick Street, St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham. May Elsie probably married in 1916 as there is a record of a marriage of May Elsie Stoneystreet to Thomas H Jones that year (A/M/J Nottingham). John Stoneystreet died aged 75 in 1928 (March Nottingham).
John enlisted on 22 March 1915 and served initially in the 3/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. There is a note on his service record that on 7 June 1915 he was released from military duties for civil employment at Messrs Armstrongs but rejoined the army on 8 June 1915. He embarked Southampton on 3 March 1916 and disembarked at Rouen the following day. He had transferred to the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters on 3 March 1916. He was admitted to 1/46 FA on 8 May the same year suffering from pneumonia and was then transferred to the 19th Casualty Clearing Station the same day. He remained at the Casualty Clearing Station until his death on 15 May. A note on his army service record says that he was suffering from cellulitis of the right leg and also septicaemia although a question mark '(?)' follows the diagnosis of septicaemia. A further entry records that death was 'due to fatigue and exposure on military service.' He had served a total of 1 year 54 days. John was buried at Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No. 1. He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Nottingham Evening Post, Roll of Honour, 22 May 1916: ‘Stoneystreet. Died abroad, after a short and painful illness, Private John Stoneystreet, the beloved and only son of J Stoneystreet, aged 18 years. Sadly missed by his sorrowing dad and sisters, Eliza and May.’ (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) Johns personal possessions were returned to his father in November 1916. They consisted of a disc, letters, broken wrist watch, letter case and photos.
