Edwin, known as 'Ted', was born in 1896 in Nottingham, the son of Charles and Ellen Mary Pownall née Oldknow. His parents were both born at Nottingham, Charles in 1864 and Mary in 1862. They had six children, five of whom survived infancy - Edith Annie (1884), Louise 1886), Charles William (1888), Edwin (1896) who were all born at Nottingham and Ada (1898) who was born at Salford Lancashire . In 1911 the family was living at 46 Livingstone Street Nottingham along with Ted’s grandmother Elizabeth. Both Charles and his father were house painters. Edwin married Emily Smith on 8th May 1914 in Nottingham and they lived at 46 Livingstone Street. Their son Edwin Samuel was born on 17 August 1914 in Nottingham. Following Ted’s death his widow Emily, now living at 7 Calcutta Street, St Ann’s, Nottingham, received a letter from the Ministry of Pensions dated 29 July 1918 informing her she was to receive a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week for her and her one child with effect from 10th June 1918.
Edwin enlisted at Nottingham on 12th December 1915 and the following day was placed into the Reserves. He was mobilised on 7th April 1916 and posted on 11th April 1916 to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He underwent his training and on 16th July 1916 he embarked for France. His army service record states that on 29th November 1917 “He was killed by hostile aircraft whilst a patient in hospital"; the report originated from the 63rd Casualty Clearing Station in France. He is buried at Haringhe (Bandaghem) Military Cemetery, Belgium (grave reference I B 22).
