He was the son of Richard Edward and Lucy Ann Lang and the brother of Richard, Lily, William John (killed in action 24/4/1916), Reginald, Florence Elizabeth, George Ernest (killed in action 18/9/1916), Ellen Mabel, Richard Edward, Annie, Violet Mabel and Sarah Ann Lang. In 1901 the family lived at Ilminster Somerset and in 1911 at 11 Milk Street, Glasshouse Street Nottingham.
