Thomas Sidney, known as 'Charlie', was born in Nottingham in 1878 (J/A/S Nottingham), the son of Thomas and Annie Jackson. He had at least five siblings: Mary, George, Gertrude, Ernest and Charles. Thomas married Esther ('Ettie') Cooper in 1902 (O/N/D Nottingham). Esther was the daughter of George and Jane Cooper and was born in Manchester on 17 September 1879. She was baptised at Ancoats St Andrew on 9 November the same year. In 1901 Esther (21), a machinist, was living with her married sister, Elizabeth Sheppard (29), and her family at 56 Pea Hill Road, St Ann's, Nottingham. Thomas and Esther had three children at the time of the 1911 Census: Thomas Sidney b. 1905 (A/M/J Nottingham), Winifred birth registered 1909 (J/F/M Nottingham) and William Eric b. 1910 (O/N/D Nottingham. In 1911 Thomas (32), a lace presser, and his wife were living at 78 Truman Street, Nottingham, with their three children, Thomas (6), Winifred (2) and William (4 months). At the time of Thomas' death in April 1917 the family home was at 58 Broad Oak Street, Nottingham.
Service Number previously 2372. Thomas served in France from 28 February 1915. He was killed in action on 24 April 1917 and is buried in the Canadian Cemetery No.2, Neuville-St. Vaast (Sp. Mem.) He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
