Family History

Ernest Humphreys was born in 1881 at New Lenton and was the son of George a lace warper and Sarah Ann Humphreys née Hankin of 4 Park Street, New Lenton. His father George was born in 1850 at Radford, his mother Sarah Ann Hankin was born in 1851 at Old Lenton, they were married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district. they went on to have 4 children 1 sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their children were George b1877 Hyson Green, Elizabeth b1878 New Lenton and Ernest b1881 New Lenton. In the 1911 census the family are living at 4 Park Street, New Lenton and are shown as George 61 yrs a lace warper, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 60 yrs and their son Ernest 29 yrs single and a stationary engine driver. Ernest Humphreys married his wife Elizabeth Gertrude Kerton (born 28th December 1882) in 1914 in Nottingham, they lived at 84 Norland Street, Nottingham, they went on to have a son Ernest George born 3rd February 1916. Following his death his widow Elizabeth was awarded a pension of 20 shillings a week which commenced on 28th May 1917.

Military History

Corporal Ernest Humphreys enlisted at Nottingham , he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action, 3rd September 1916, during the attack on the German positions near Beaumont Hamel, France, during the Battle of the Somme. He is buried at Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, France. Plot 2. Row A. Grave 31.

Extra Information

His brother George Humphreys had enlisted into the Army on 28th December 1894 at Derby, he was 18 yrs and 5 months old, he was a labourer, he served with the South Staffordshire Regiment and saw service in the East Indies from 24th December 1896 until 29th November 1907 when he went to South Africa, he returned to England on 23rd January 1911. He was discharged at his own request on 23rd January 1911 he had served for 18 yrs and 24 days. Following the outbreak of war he re enlisted on 26th January 1915, he was by now 38 yrs and 3 months old. He went to France on 13th July 1915 and following being wounded , a gunshot wound to his thigh he was discharged on 22nd June 916 being no longer fit for active service. He died on 12th March 1940 in Nottingham
