Family History

John Barker was the son of John , a shoemaker, and Elizabeth Barker of 14 High Cross Street Nottingham. His father John was born in 1847 at Nottingham and his mother Elizabeth Wheldon was born in 1845 also at Nottingham. Married in 1867 they had seven children - William b.1869, Adelaide b.1871, John b.1874, Elizabeth b.1878, Henry b.1881, Ernest b.1883 and Leonard b.1885. John married Lucy Dilks in Nottingham in 1893 and they had five children - Grace Adelaide b.894, Lucy b.1896, John William b.1902, Lizzie b.1905 and George Henry b.1911. In 1901 John and his family lived at 40 Moodey Street Carlton Road Nottingham. By 1911 they lived at 43 Martin Street St Ann’s and at the time of Barker’s death lived at 7 Cherry Place Coalpit Lane (both Nottingham).

Military History

John Barker enlisted at Nottingham landed in Gallipoli on 7th November 1915. He was killed in the collapse of his dugout during a storm at Suvla on 26th November 1915. The storm that day caused the dug-out he and others were sheltering in to collapse and five men, including Barker, were killed. He is buried at Hill 10 Cemetery Suvla Gallipoli Grave Reference: I A 15
