Family History

John William Thorpe was born in 1877 at Worksop he was the son of Charles and Mary Jane Thorpe of Fairview, Whitwell. He married Mary Orwin (born 13th April 1881) in 1911 their marriage was on 7th August 1911 at Thorpe Salvin they lived at Duchess Street, Whitwell and went on to have a daughter Hilda Annie born 21st June 1912. Commencing 7th February 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military History

Private John William Thorpe enlisted at Burton upon Trent, on 14th February 1902 he was 20 yrs and 4 months and was a labourer. he served with the 2nd battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment serving in South Africa 1902 to 1903 and India 1903 to 1910, he was posted to the reserves in 1910 and embodied on 5th August 1914. He landed in France on 27th August 1914 and was killed in action on 14th September 1914 and is commemorated on La Ferte-Sous- Jouaree Memorial France,
