George was born at Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire (near the village of Newstead) in 1889 the son of Charles Thomas a stonemason and Martha Hodson née Morley of 106 Front Street, Arnold. Previously the family had lived at 29 Turner Street St Anns Nottingham. His father Charles Thomas was born in 1865 at Stone Staffordshire where he worked as a stone mason. Martha was born in Hucknall in 1868. They were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they had a total of nine children who were : - Thomas Granville b1888, George Gordon b1890, Charles Thomas b1891, Clarence Edwin b1893, William Henry b1895, (these children were all born Hucknall Torkard ) Evelyn Jane b1899, Fred 1901, Daisy b1903, Elizabeth May b1905 the latter children were born in Nottingham. He was married to an Ethel Blatherwick whom he married in St Anns on 18th March 1911 and he had a son William born May 1913, their address was 106 Front St Arnold. In the 1911 census we find George age 22 yrs and an iron cleaner who is living with his new wife Ethel 21yrs living at 40 Peas Hill Rise, Peas Hill Road, Nottingham. Meanwhile in the same census his family are living on Mansfield Road, Daybrook and are shown as :- Charles Thomas 47 yrs a stone mason head of the family he is living with his wife Martha 44 yrs and their children , Thomas Granville 23 yrs a plasterer, Charles Thomas 21 yrs a general carter, Clarence Edwin 18 yrs a stone mason, William Henry 16 yrs (no occupation shown ) Evelyn Jane 12 yrs a scholar, Fred 10 yrs a scholar, Daisy 8 yrs a scholar and Elizabeth May 6yrs
Lance Corporal George Gordon Hodson first attested at Nottingham on 28th October 1914 he gave his birth place as Hucknall Torkard and his age as 27 yrs 338 days, his occupation is given as an electric car cleaner. He states he is married to an Ethel Blatherwick who he married in St Anns on 18th March 1911 and he has a son William born May 1913, their address is 106 Front St Arnold. However he is then discharged from the army on 14th November 1914 as being unfit to become a soldier. However as the war went on he must have enlisted again and is known to have enlisted at Derby. There is an original nominal roll of the 1/6th battalion held in the archives of the Sherwood Foresters Museum which shows that he was with “C” Company and that on the 3rd October 1918, he was reported missing believed a Prisoner of War. He was later discovered on the battlefield and we now know that he was in fact killed in action with the 1/6th battalion on that date. He is buried in Montbrehain British cemetery, France
