John Henton was born in 1886 at Norwell Woodhouse and was the son of William a farmer and Sarah Henton, née Horton of Norwell Woodhouse, Newark. His father William was born in 1845 at Balderton, his mother Sarah Matilda Horton was born in 1851 at Norwell, they were married on 14th May 1868 at Norwell and went on to have 12 children, sadly 5 died in infancy or early childhood, their children listed on the 1901/1911 census were Sarah b1870, Mary b1872, Alice b1878, William Henry b1879, Ernest b1882, Ruth b1885, John b1886 and Leonard Arthur b1889 Annie b1893. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Norwell Woodhouse and are shown as William 66 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Sarah 60 yrs and their children, Ruth 26 yrs and Annie 18yrs, also living with them is a male servant. In the 1911 census he is a visitor at Main Street, Balderton the address of Joseph Knott 31 yrs a baker and grocer and his family, he is shown as being 24 yrs single and a butcher.
Private John Henton was called up for service on 6th April 1916 and reported to the Derby depot on 7th April 1916, he was 29 yrs and 223 days old, he gave his address as Norwell Woodhouse and his next of kin was his father William of the same address, he stated he was a farmers son. Initially posted with the service number 41699 to the 4th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) he was transferred on 14th April 1916 to the Scottish Rifles. He embarked from Folkstone on 5th August 1917 and disembarked the same day at Boulogne. On 22nd August he was again transferred this time to the 2nd battalion Royal Scots. He was killed in action on 26th September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
