He was the husband of Gertrude Nellie (née Newton) Coates who died (probably during childbirth) in 1905 aged 25 and the father of Eva Mary and Charles Edward Coates. He was the husband of Louisa (née Morley) Coates of 57 Parker Street Nottingham.
