He was the son of Thomas and Susannah Coates and the brother of Hannah Elizabeth and Ernest Coates. In 1911 they lived at 46 Milton Street Bulwell Nottingham. He was the husband of Gertrude Nellie (née Newton) Coates who died (probably during childbirth) in 1905 aged 25 and the father of Eva Mary and Charles Edward Coates. He was the husband of Louisa (née Morley) Coates of 57 Parker Street Nottingham.
