He was the son of John Lindley, born in 1873 at Basford Nottingham and working as a goods checker for Midland Railway and Teresa Lindley, born in 1874 at Mansfield, who worked as a lace hand. John Lindley later married Selina Eleanor Lindley (née Hayes). He was the step brother of Gwendoline b.1906 and Hilda b.1908.The family lived at 4 Snowdon Terrace Spring Close Old Lenton Nottingham.
William Henry Lindley volunteered for service and following training he was drafted to France, arriving on 28/02/1915. He was killed in action on 22/09/1915 when the trenches at Verbranden Molan, Ypres were heavily shelled. John Lindley was killed in the Les Boeufs area during the Battle of the Somme on 27/10/1916 whilst serving with the Machine Gun Corps.
