George James Armison

George James joined the Grenadier Guards in Nottingham on 7 May 1901 at the age of 18 years and 5 months. His previous occupation was given as ‘Collier’. His regimental number was 9593 and he served in the UK until he had completed his 12 years Colour Service and was discharged on 6 May 1913. He was awarded the Coronation Medal in 1902. When George James re-enlisted on 15 August 1914 he joined the 3/Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regt.) and was issued with a new regimental number – 3969. On 9 September 1914 George James transferred to 2/Battalion Grenadier Guards and was given 18254 as his regimental number. His next of kin was shown as his brother Thomas Armison, residing at 18 Hall Street, Mansfield, Notts. George James proceeded to France on 4 January 1915 and was killed in action with 2/Battalion on 16 September 1916 at the battle of the Somme. He is listed on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 8 D, he was also awarded the British War and Victory Medals.”
