William Machin was born on 24th October 1876 at Radford and was the son of Samuel a twist hand in the lace trade and Letitia Machin nee Gell. His father Samuel was born in 1854 in Radford and his mther Letitia Gell was born in 1855 in Derby, they were married on 3rd October 1874 at Radford and went on to have the following children, Emma b1875, Emily b1875, William b1876, Ellen b1880, Milley b1881, Eallus b1882, Ada b1882 and Letitia b1888 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 6 Brushfield Street, Hyson Green Nottingham and are shown as Samuel 57 yrs a twist hand, he is living with his wife Letitia 56 yrs a mender in the lace trade and their son William 34 yrs single and a general labourer. They state that they have been married for 37 yrs and have had 7 children however two have subsequently died.
Private William Machin enlisted in 1895 at 19 yrs of age, he served with the service number 4984 in the Sherwood Foresters. He later served with the service number 5437 in the Machine Guns Corps and was later transferred to the 560th Home Service Employment Coy, Labour Corps where he served with the service number 444552. He died in a Chester military hospital on 17th May 1919 and is buried in Nottingham Basford Cemetery
