Arthur Joseph Hyde was born in 1885 in Hyson Green and was the son of William Hyde a lace maker and Mary Ann Hyde née Pinder of 53 Cedar Road, Sherwood Rise Nottingham. His father William was born in 1863 in Tickhill, Derbyshire his mother Mary Ann Pinder was born in 1863 at Sneinton, Nottingham, they were married in 1883 at Nottingham and went on to have 7 children sadly 2 of whom died in infancy or early childhood, (however only 4 are listed in the 1891-1901-1911 census) their surviving children were all born in Nottingham and were Arthur Joseph b1885, Albert Percy b1887, Walter b1890 Mable b1894. In the 1911 census the family are living at 53 Cedar Road, Sherwood Rise , Nottingham and are shown as William 48 yrs a lace maker he is living with his wife Mary Anne 48 yrs a house warper and their daughter Mabel 17 yrs and their married son Walter 21 yrs a printer, also ;iving with them is Annie Hyde 20 yrs a lace hand (the wife of Walter) His brother Albert Percy Hyde is now married and is living at 15 Rochdale Terrace, Hyson Green with his wife Maud 26 yrs and daughter Elsie 1 year. In the same 1911 census Arthur Joseph has also left home, he is living at the Old Bell public house Long Eaton, he is shown as being 25 yrs and is working as a barman for the landlord William Tillotson The newspaper report of his death gives his address as 219 Gladstone Street Nottingham.
Private Arthur Joseph Hyde, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He landed in France on 2nd May 1915 and was killed in action on 30th April 1917. He is buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Loos.
His brother Private Albert Percy Hyde, served with the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he lived at 15 Rochdale Terrace, Kirkstead Street, Nottingham. In memoriam published 16th May 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HYDE. – Killed in action, April 30th, Private Arthur Hyde, Sherwood Foresters, 219, Gladstone-street, age 32. His country called, he answered. – Sorrowing mother, father, brothers in France and India, and sister Mabel. “HYDE. – Killed in action, April 30th, 1917, Private Arthur Hyde, 219, Gladstone-street, Sherwood-rise.
