Arthur Brownett was born in 1887 at Radford and was the son of Edgar a lace maker and Clara Brownett of 110 Independent Street, Nottingham. His father Edgar was born in 1866 at Radford and his mother Clara was born in 1869 also at Radford. They were married in c1885 and went on to have 2 further children, sadly one was to die in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving son was Oliver b1899 also at Radford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 110 Independent Street, Nottingham and are shown as Edgar 45 yrs married a lace maker, he is living with his two sons Arthur 24 yrs a drapers assistant and Oliver 12 yrs as scholar, their mother Clara is not listed at the home address on the night of the census. His mother however was found to have been admitted into the Nottingham City Lunacy Asylum, she was admitted on 31st October 1910 and discharged on 18th February 1913.
Private Arthur Brownett enlisted at Derby, he served with the 1/4th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 15th September 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
His younger brother Private Oliver Brownett enlisted at Nottingham and served initially with the service number 281742 in the Army Service Corps, he died of wounds on 30th March 1918 whist serving with the 6th battalion The Queen's ( Royal West Surrey Regiment ) and is buried at Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France grave reference V.B.23
