He was the son of Daniel and Esther Tarbox and the brother of Harriet and George Tarbox. In 1881 they lived at St Albans. By 1891, the family were living in Radford, Nottingham, under the surname White. Ernest was the husband of Gertrude née Cross, whom he married on 16 July 1904, and the father of George Stanley (8 February 1905), Sydney Ernest (11 August 1907), Charles Leonard 11 June 1909) and Winifred (7 October 1913). In 1911 they lived at 53, Rosetta Road, Basford, and later at 7 Castleton Street, King's Meadow Road, Meadows (both Nottingham). Gertrude and her children had moved to 487, Berridge Road, Hyson Green by 29 January 1917. She was awarded a weekly pension of 26/- [26 shillings] with effect from 19 February1917.
12th Bn Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) Ernest enlisted 23 January 1915 standing 5' 9" and weighing 132 lbs. He claimed to be 40 years seven months old. However, census and obituary sources confirm his age as about 38 (birth not registered). He was killed in action on 14 July 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier and Face 6 D and 7 D).
Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 21 August 1916: 'TARBOX - Killed in action July 14th, Sergeant Ernest Tarbox, Royal Scots, aged 38 years, beloved husband of Gerty Tarbox, 7, Castleton Street, late Lambert Street, Hyson Green. Duty nobly done - From wife and children.'
