Family History

Edward Arthur Howitt was born in 1899 at Grantham and was the son of Arthur a blacksmiths striker and Elizabeth Howitt née Edson of 22 Raleigh Street, Radford, Nottingham. His father Arthur was born in 1872 at Grantham, his mother Elizabeth Edson was born in 1875 also at Grantham, they were married in 1897 at Grantham, they had 4 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, theri other surviving child was Eva Howitt b1901 at Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family lived at 14 Mitchell Street Alfreton Road Radford Nottingham and are shown as Arthur 39 yrs a blacksmiths striker, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 36 yrs and their children, Edward 12 yrs a scholar and Eva 10 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Edward Arthur Howitt enlisted in Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 31065 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment). He was serving with the 2nd battalion Royal Scots Regiment when he was killed in action on 2nd September 1918 and is buried at Vaulx Hill Cemetery, France.
