Thomas Claude Carter was born in 1892 at Newark and was the son of Joseph a manager at a glass and china dealers and Mary Kate Carter née Herring of 39 Pyatt Street Trent Bridge, Nottingham. His father Joseph was born in 1868 at Newark and his mother Mary Kate Herring was born in 1865 at Nottingham, they were married in 1885 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Maggie b1887, Annie b1888, Thomas b1892, Mary Kate b1894, George b1896, Joseph b1900 and Irene b1905, all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 39 Pyatt Street, Meadows, Nottingham and are shown as Joseph 43 yrs a manager at a glass and china dealers, he is living with his wife Mary Kate 46 yrs and their children, Mary Kate 17 yrs a lace mender, George 14 yrs a time keeper, Joseph 11 yrs and Irene 6 yrs. In the same 1911 census Thomas Claude who has joined the army is living in barracks at Sherness and is shown as being 19 yrs of age and a gunner with the Royal Garrison Artillery.
Sergeant Thomas Claude Carter enlisted at Newark in 1910 and served with the 27th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He was serving in China at the outbreak of the war and returned to England in 1915. He died of wounds in the military hospital at Rouen on 6th March 1916 and is buried at St Sever Cemetery, Rouen.
Article published 18th March 1916 in the Newark Herald :- Son of Joseph & Mary Kate Carter, 39 Pyatt Street, Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Grandson of the late Joseph Carter of Newark. Attended Wesleyan Day School and Barnbygate Wesleyan Sunday School. Joined army in 1910 and serving in China at the outbreak of war. Volunteered for active service and returned to England in 1915. Going to France on Sept. 4th. Wounded on the 3rd Feb. 1916 with badly fractured thigh and flesh wound in left leg. Died in military hospital, Rouen.
