George Edwards was born in 1881 at Radford and was the son of the late Wingate a lace maker and Harriet Edwards née Smart of 5 Cricketers' Cottages Bright Street Radford Nottingham. His father Wingate was born in 1847 at Sleaford he died in 1902 at Nottingham he was 54 yrs of age, his mother Harriett Smart was born in 1853 at Radford, they were married on 28th May 1871 at St Peters Church, Radford, they went on to have the following children, William Wingate b1876, Elijah b1878, George b1881 and Ernest Morris b1891 all were born in Radford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Cricket Cottages, Radford and are shown as George 30 yrs a lace curtain maker he is head of the family and is living with his widowed mother Harriett 58 yrs and his brother Ernest Morris 20 yrs a lace threader
Private George Edwards attested on 26th October at Nottingham, he gave his age as 33 yrs and 11 months, his address was 5 Cricketers Cottages, Radford, his occupation was that of a lace maker and his next of kin was his mother Harriett of the same address , he was issued with service number 3249 and posted to the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was discharged from the army on 2nd November 1914 under King's Regulations 156 (4) . He must as either re enlisted or was called up for service as he was serving with the 1/5th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry when he was killed in action on 15th February 1916 he is buried at Authuile Military Cemetery, Authuile, France.
