John William Heffron was born in 1886 Lenton, Nottingham and was the son of Joseph Heffron and Elizabeth Hannah Heffron née Robinson. His father Joseph was born in 1852 at Leeds; he died in 1898 at Nottingham. His mother Elizabeth Hannah Robinson was born in 1852 at Leeds and died in 1893 at Nottingham. In the 1911 census John William is boarder, living at 15 Rutland Road, West Bridgford, he is shown as being 23 yrs of age a boarder. He is living with his married sister Jane Elizabeth Cartwright (née Heffron) 38 yrs and her husband George Cartwright 40 yrs, a leather finisher, and their family. John married his wife Lily Huthwaite in 1916 at Nottingham.
Private 7987 John William Heffron, served with the 1st Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers. He enlisted on 28th December 1903 at Nottingham and served in India and South Africa. He was discharged to the reserves, time served, on 4th 31st March 1911. On the outbreak of war he was mobilised on 5th August 1914 at Ayr and rejoined his old regiment the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He landed in France 27th August 1914. Wounded by a gunshot wound to his shoulder, he left France on 13th February 1915. His wounds led to his discharge on 4th September 1915, being no longer fit for war service; he was issued with Silver War Badge Number 3856. Following a short illness he died at Mountsorrel on 11th December 1918 and was buried in Nottingham General Cemetery on 18 December 1918.

Notice published 12th December 1918, Nottingham Evening Post: “HEFFRON. – On 11th inst., [December 1918] at Mountsorrel, John William, the dearly beloved husband of Lily, after short illness, late of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. – Wife and sisters Jane, Mary Ann, Louie, and Lizzie, and brothers Bob, Arthur, and Tom (in France).
