George James was born in 1881 at Cannock Stafford and was the son of Charles a bricklayer and Eliza Hammonds, née Bradbury of Cannock, Stafford. His father Charles was born in 1850 at Rugby he died in 1899 at Litchfield he was 49 yrs of age, his mother Eliza Bradbury was born in 1854 at Cannock, they were married in 1878 at Cannock and went on to have the following children, Florence b1879, George b1881, Mary Ann b1884 and Ethel b1887. George married Sarah Clifford Austin in 1905, they marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district they lived at 26 Ewart Road Hyson Green Nottingham. In the 1911 census they are living at 26 Ewart Road, Nottingham and are shown as George 29 yrs a shop assistant he is living with his wife Sarah 31 yrs they state they have had one child but it had died in infancy.
Private George James Hammonds, served with the 2/4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 9th December 1917. He is buried in Ribecourt Road Cemetery, Trescault.
In memoriam published 9th December 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HAMMONDS. – In loving memory of Pte. George James Hammonds, 26 Ewart-road, who made the supreme sacrifice, December 9th, 1917.
