Walter White (Wally) (junior) was born in 1897 at Nottingham he lived at 22 Kennington Road Radford Nottingham. His parents were Walter Bocking White (senior) a cycle polisher and Elizabeth Dalton of 79 Kennington Road, Radford, Nottingham, both his parents were born in Sheffield , his father in 1866 and his mother in 1871, they were married on 20th February 1888 at St Pauls Church in Sheffield. They went on to have 11 children, sadly one died in infancy their surviving children were, James b1890 Sheffield, William b1892 Sheffield, Fanny 1893 Sheffield, Walter b1897 Nottingham, Fred b1900 Nottingham, Alfred b1901 Nottingham, Elizabeth b1903 Nottingham, George b1904 Nottingham Ellen b1907 Nottingham and Winifred b1912 Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 3 Bastion Street, Radford and are shown as Walter 45 yrs a cycle polisher for Raleigh, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 40 yrs and their children, Fanny 18 yrs a ring spinner in cotton trade, Walter 14 yrs a bottle labeller, Fred 11 yrs a scholar, Alfred 10 yrs a scholar, Elizabeth 8 yrs a scholar George 7 yrs and Ellen 4 yrs.
Private Walter White, served with the 12/13th (originally 12th) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He landed in France on 9th September 1915 and died of influenza at No. 21 Casualty Clearing Station on 22nd November 1918. He is buried in Caudry British Cemetery.
His father Walter Bocking White also served during the Great War, he enlisted on 26th May 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 39 yrs and 6 months, (a false age he was actually 49 yrs of age born in 1866) ) his address was 79 Kennington Road, Radford, he was a cycle polisher and his next of kin was his wife Elizabeth of the same address. He was given the service number 23971 and posted tot he King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he reported to the their depot at Pontefract on 30th May 1915 He is not believed to have served overseas and was discharged from the Army on 30th September 1916 as medically unfit to serve due to deafness. Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 28/11/1918: 'White. In loving memory of our son Pte W White (Wally) who died in France after 4 years and 3 months. Father, sisters, brothers, 79 Kennington Road.' In memoriam published 'Nottingham Evening Post,' 22nd November 1919 :- “WHITE. – In loving remembrance of Pte. W. White (Wally), who died in France of influenza, November 22nd, 1918. In our home you are fondly remembered, love linger around your dear name, true hearts that have always loved you, love you in death just the same. – Sadly missed by his loving mother, father, sisters, brothers. “WHITE. – In loving remembrance of Pte. White (Wally), who died in France, November 22nd, 1918.
