Family History

William Arthur Brown was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of James Henry a painter and Faith Eliza Brown née Pounder of 21 Pym Street, St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham. His father James Henry was born in 1863 at Nottingham, his mother Faith Eliza Pounder was born in 1868 at Nottingham, they were married on 2nd February 1892 at Holy Trinity Church, Nottingham, they had 4 further children, Albert Edwin Ernest Thomas, Walter and Kate. In the 1911 census the family are living at 23 Moffatt Street, Nottingham, Faith Eliza Brown is 42 yrs and is married she is living with her children, Ernest 17 yrs needle maker, Arthur 15 yrs a fish monger, Kate 13 yrs and Walter 11 yrs.

Military History

Private William Arthur Brown enlisted at Nottingham on 25th August 1914, giving his age as 19 yrs and 125 days, he was a dropper maker. He was initially posted with the service number 13389 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was transferred to the Army Cyclist Corps on 1st March 1915. He landed with the Mediteranean Force on 1st July 1915 and was admitted to hospital on Gallipoli, he was transferred to Alexandria Hospital suffering with Pyaemia where he died on 18th September 1915. His name is commemorated on the Alexandria war memorial, Egypt.

Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged) 15 October 1915: 'Private AW Brown, Army Cyclist Corps, 21 Pym Street, Nottingham, died of wounds, September 18th, aged 20.'
