Leonard Hollingworth was born in 1886 at Nottingham and was the son of the late Charles Henry Hollingworth a painter and Angela Hollingworth née Weldon of Nottingham. His father Charles Henry was born in 1863 in Nottingham, he died in 1903 at Nottingham he was 41 yrs of age, his mother Angela Weldon was born in 1866 at Stinford, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1885 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Leonard b1886, Ada Curtis b1890 and Sidney b1901 all were born in Nottingham. Leonard married Laura Edith Brown in 1909 in Nottingham, they went on to have a daughter Winifred born 1912 the family lived at 59 Ashfield Road, Sneinton Dale, Nottingham. His probate was proven in Nottingham on 17th October 1916 and shows him as Leonard Hollingworth 59 Ashfield Road, Sneinton Dale, Nottingham Second Lieutenant in HM Army, died on 29th August 1916 in France, his effects of £104 was left to George Frederick Ellis pawnbroker.
Second Lieutenant Leonard Hollingworth was a former Robin Hood Rifleman, in which he served with the service number 3816. He was commissioned on 8th September 1915 into the Devonshire Regiment serving with the 11th battalion attached 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment. He landed in France on 17th July 1916. and was killed in action on 29th August 1916. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission, 'Soldiers Died' and medal index card give his date of death as 28th September 1916. However, the register of the disposal of his personal effects agrees with the family notices as 29th August 1916. As the first notice was published on 5th September 1916, a little over three weeks before the official date of his supposed death, the official date must be incorrect. Death notice published 8th September 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HOLLINGWORTH. – Killed in action, August 29th, 1916, Second-Lieut. Leonard Hollingworth, 59, Ashfield-road, Sneinton Dale, eldest son of Mrs. Bennett, 80, Gregory-boulevard.” In memoriam published 29th August 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HOLLINGWORTH. – In affectionate remembrance of Second-Lieut. Leonard Hollingworth, Devons, killed in action August 29th, 1916. – Wife.” In memoriam published 30th August 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HOLLINGWORTH. – In loving memory of Second-Lieut. Leonard Hollingworth, killed in action August 29th, 1916. – Mother and dad. “HOLLINGWORTH. – In loving memory of Second-Lieut. Leonard Hollingworth, killed in action August 29th, 1916. – Sister Cissie and brother Sidney.” In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post 29th August 1918 :- “HOLLINGWORTH. – Leonard, 2nd Lieut. Devonshire Regt., killed on the Somme August 29th, 1916. Loving remembrance. – Wife and child. “HOLLINGWORTH. – In loving memory of Sec.-Lieut. Leonard Hollingworth, eldest son of Mrs. Bennett, 80, Gregory-boulevard, killed in action August 29th, 1916. “HOLLINGWORTH – In loving memory of our dear brother, Sec.-Lieut.
