Harry Augustus Ballard was born on 10th June 1869 at Nottingham he was the son of the late Abraham Ballard a clerk and the late Alice Ballard née Hall of 13 Albert Street, Nottingham, his father Abraham was born in 1844 at Beeston, he died in 1902 at Nottingham aged 58 yrs of age, his mother Alice Hall was born in 1846 at Nottingham, she died in 1893 at Nottingham aged 45 yrs,they were married prior to 1867 and had 8 children. At the time of Harry discharge his home address was 27 Great Freeman Street, Nottingham,

Military History

Sergeant Harry Augustus Ballard originally enlisted on 2nd May 1903 at Nottingham, he served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he saw service in the East Indies, India and Malta, and was discharged time served on 1st May 1907. He rejoined on 10th September 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 44 yrs and 90 days, he was a clerk, he was posted to the West Yorkshire Regiment when he was promoted to Sergeant on 20th November 1914. It was discovered he was suffering from Tuberculosis of the lungs and as a result was discharged from the Army on 24th July 1917 his discharge address was 27 Great Freeman Street, Nottingham. He died on 21st June 1918 aged 49 yrs.

Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 23/6/1918:'Ballard. On 21st inst. Sgt. Harry Augustus Ballard, aged 49, late Sherwood Foresters. Military funeral Tuesday 12.30.'In 1891 he was serving with 1st Bn Sherwood Foresters in Devon.
