Family History

Charles Shaw was born in 1886 at Nottingham, he married Sarah Alice Ellis (born 28th March 1888) in 1909 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham registration district, they lived at 26 Crown Street, Blue Bell Hill and had the following children, Mary Elizabeth born 2nd June 1910, Leslie born 30th August 1911 and Harriett Elsie born 6th March 1916. In 1911 he is living at 6 King's Place, Woolpack Lane, he is shown as being 23 yrs of age and a brewer, he is living with his wife Alice 23 yrs and their daughter Elizabeth 10 months of age, they are boarding with his father in law Thomas Ellis 51 yrs a tinsmith and his family. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week which commenced on 28th October 1918.

Military History

Private Charles Shaw enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was killed in action on 27th March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial Panels 52 to 54
