John Samuel Blissett was born in 1894 in Kirton in Lindsey, Lincolnshire, and was the only son of John Samuel Blissett, a mill labourer, and Annie Blissett née Cole. His father John Samuel was born in 1871 in Kirton in Lindsey and his mother Sarah Ann Cole was born in 1873 in Holme near Ashby, Lincolnshire. They were married in 1892 in Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire, and went on to have a further child a daughter Amy b1900, also born in Kirton . In the 1911 census the family are living at Turner Street, Kirton in Lindsey, and are shown as John Samuel 40 yrs a mill labourer who is living with his wife Annie 38 yrs and their two children John Samuel 17 yrs a saddler and Amy 11 yrs a scholar. By the time of John Samuel’s attestation the family are living at 71 Alfred Street South, Nottingham.
John Samuel Blissett enlisted on 10th December 1915 at Nottingham. He gave his age as 22 yrs and 2 months, his address as 71 Alfred Street South, Nottingham, and his occupation as saddle and harness maker. His next of kin was his mother Annie of the same address. On the 11th December he was posted to the Army Reserve and was then mobilised on 7th February 1916, reporting for duty at Derby. He was posted to the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went with his battalion to Dublin to quell the Irish Rebellion and was killed on 26th April 1916. He is buried in Deans Grange Cemetery (grave reference SW T1 85). He had served for only 82 days and was one of 31 men of the Sherwood Foresters killed in Dublin.
