Ernest Wallace Loasby was born in 1881 the son of the late Frederick an upholsterer and Elizabeth Loasby née Moore, and the brother of Grace, Anne, Herbert and William Loasby. Frederick was born in 1845 at King's Lynn, Elizabeth Moore was born in 1842 in Cambridge, married on 16th September 1863 at Chesterton, Cambridge they went on to have 8 children. In 1901 they lived at 1 Cranmer Grove Nottingham. Ernest married Ada Hannah Kirkham (born 6th August 1882) in 1910 at Nottingham, they went on to have a son Ernest Frederick born 4th November 1915, they lived at 101 Beaconsfield Street, Radford In 1911 they lived at 138 Berridge Road Hyson Green Nottingham. Commencing 28th October 1918 his widow Ada was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.
Pte. Ernest Wallace Loasby, enlisted on 8th December 1915 in Nottingham, giving his age as 34 yrs and 11 months, his address as 101 Beaconsfield Street, Radford Road, Nottingham, his next of kin as his wife Ada Hannah of the same address . He served with the 17th Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), he was killed in action on 28th March 1918. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial A former hosiery worker, he attested under the Derby Scheme on 8th December 1915, being mobilised on 12th October 1916. Arriving in France on 5th August 1917, he was admitted to the 38th Field Ambulance on 13th October 1917, transferring to the 12th Field Ambulance on 23rd October 1917. His illness: “P.U.O.” – pyrexia of unknown origin. Rejoining his unit on 2nd November 1917, he served first with 10th Entrenching Battalion, 5/6th Battalion and finally 17th Battalion of the Royal Scots.
Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 13/4/1918: 'Loasby. Killed in action March 28th, Ernest the dearly loved husband of Ada Loasby. At rest in the homeland.' 'Loasby. Killed in action March 28th Ern. our dearly loved brother and youngest son of the late F W and E Loasby. At rest Thy will be done. - Brothers & sisters.'
