He was the son of Joseph and Sarah Kirk (née Chapman). In 1901 he lived with his parents and siblings - Joseph Harold, Bertie Chapman, Cyril, Gladys Mary and Leslie – at 2 Henry Road West Bridgford. His father was listed as a lace manufacturer. In 1911 they lived at 4 Musters Road West Bridgford. He is listed on the 1911 Census as John Kirk
Gunner Jack Kirk, 1/1st (Nottinghamshire) Battery Royal Horse Artillery, enlisted in September 1914. He served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force for three years in Egypt and Palestine, he was wounded on 3rd April 1918 whilst in action at the Gordon Valley in Palestine, he died of these wounds on 1st May 1918 at No 2/4 London Hospital in Jericho. He is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery.
His brother Joseph Harold also served enlisting into the Sherwood Foresters at Nottingham on 25th September 1914. He landed in France on 6th March 1915 and served throughout the war being demobbed on 14th April 1919.
