Family History

Harry married Laura Thompson in 1917 (A/M/J Nottingham). Laura was born in Bulwell, Nottingham, on 30 August 1893 (O/N/D Basford), the daughter of Henry and Mary Jane Thompson. In 1911 the family was living at 16 Milton Street, Bulwell; Laura (18) was working as an ironer at a laundry. She and Harry lived with her parents after their marriage. Laura married secondly Alexander Wilkinson Turner in 1919 (O/N/D Nottingham). In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled Laura and Alexander (b. 1897), a coal miner, were living in Mansfield. Laura died in 1990 (Nov. Mansfield).

Military History

42nd Bty Harry was killed in action on 2 December 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France (Panel 1).

Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 1 January 1918: 'Smith. Killed in action December 2nd 1917, Gunner Harry Smith aged 30, 16 Milton Street Bulwell.
