Henry known, as Harry, was born in 1893 the son of Henry a window cleaner and Maria Simpson (née Traunter). His father was born in 1862 at Spalding Lincolnshire and his mother in 1866 at Worksop. Married at Worksop in 1864, they had seven children all born at Nottingham - William b.886, Beatrice b.1890, Henry b.1893, Violet b.1896, May b.1899, Rose b.1901 and George b.1907. His father died in Nottingham in 1907 aged 45. In 1911 they lived at 11 Moorgate Street Radford. Maria was a charwoman whilst Beatrice and Violet were cigarette makers.
Henry Simpson enlisted at Nottingham and served with “B” Company, 10th Battalion. He landed in France on 15th December 1915 and was taken prisoner on 14th February 1916 during the attack on ‘The Bluff’ by his battalion. He died in German hands at Kortri municipal hospital on 25th February 1916 due to brain inflammation and is buried in Kortrik (St. Jan) Communal Cemetery, Belgium Grave Reference A.57. His family mistakenly believed he had been killed on the day of the attack on 'The Bluff.' (see In Memoriam)
