Sidney Walter Roworth was born in 1892 at Nottingham and was the adopted son of the late Thomas a school master Annie Roworth née Hockley of 376 Alfreton Road, Nottingham. His father Thomas Roworth was born in 1838 at Seagrave, Leicestershire he died in 1913 at Nottingham, his mother Annie Hockley was born in 1834 at Donnington, Lincolnshire she died in 1908, they were married in 1860 at Sleaford and went on to have the following children, Kate Adelina b1865 Wilton, Northamptonshire, Georgina b1866 Huddersfield, Maurice Ingram b1871 Derby and Shawnee b1872 Ashbourne, Derbyshire. In the 1901 census the family are living at 376 Alfreton Road, Nottingham, Thomas is shown as being 63 yrs a retired school master, it is on this census that Sidney appears and is shown as being 8 yrs of age and was an adopted son. In the 1911 census the family were still living at 376 Alfreton Road Nottingham and were shown as Thomas Roworth 73 yrs a widow, he is living with his daughter Georgina 44 yrs a bookbinder and son Sidney Walter 19 yrs a grocers assistant, also in the house is Gertie Chester 32 yrs a domestic helper she is described as a niece. Sidney married Eveline May Tomlinson (born 2nd April 1894) in 1913 at Nottingham, they lived at 111 Melton Terrace, Melton Street, Nottingham. they had a son Raymond Alfred Roworth born 30th April 1916. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 4th March 1918.
Private Sidney Walter Roworth enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 19th August 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
