Joseph Leonard Krause was born in 1899 the son of Joseph Henry am furniture dealer and Catherine Ann Krause née Day and the brother of Hubert Stuart, Henry Archibald, Percy George and Joseph Leonard (killed in action 26/9/1917) Krause. Joseph was born in 1861 at Old Basford, Catherine Ann Day was born in 1862 at Radford, married in 1881 at Nottingham, they had 9 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 2 Collinson Street Hyson Green Nottingham. Joseph 50 yrs and a furniture dealer , Frederick Lewis 20 yrs and a butcher Joseph Henry Krause later moved to 49 Hull Street Brooklyn New York USA.

Military History

Private Joseph Leonard Krause enlisted at Derby and served with the 2/5th Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment , he died of wounds on 26th September 1917 and is buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No 3 grave reference I H 28

His brother Private Frederick Lewis Krause, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 18th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 1st March 1917. He is buried at Couin New British Cemetery.Grave Reference: B 19 Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 16/10/1917: 'Krause. Died of wounds September 26th 1917 Pte Len Krause Notts and Derbys 2 Collison Street aged 19. - Deeply mourned by mother and brothers in France.'
