Family History

Ernest Brewster Dykes was born in 1885 the son of John, a painter, and Eliza Dykes (née Savage). His father was born in 1866 in Nottingham and died in 1901. His mother Eliza Savage was born in 1867 at Carlton. Married in 1885, they had four children - Ernest Brewster b.1885, Julia b.1888, John Henry b1896 and Elsie b.1900. In 1901 they lived at Chapel Street Carlton. Eliza married Henry Metcalf, a labourer, in 1905 and they lived at 5 Meadows Cottages Nottingham. In 1911 Ernest lived at 68 Arthur Street Netherfield with a fellow employee of the Great Northern Railway Company. When Ernest attested in 1915 he gave his address as 56 Manvers Street Netherfield. He married Daisy Kate Gregory on 18th July 1918 and they lived at 18 Forester Street, Netherfield.

Military History

Ernest Brewster Dykes attested on 8th December 1915 at Carlton aged 30. He was posted to the reserves the following day. He was mobilised on 22nd February 1917 and was initially posted to the Durham Light Infantry. He landed in France on 19th March 1917 and was transferred to the 123rd Company Labour Corps on 14th May 1917. He was admitted to Huddersfield War Hospital on 3rd July 1917 where he was treated for Cardiac Dilation and was discharged on 11th September 1917. He died on 16th February 1919 following a short illness. He is buried in Carlton Cemetery.

Military Funeral Carlton Cemetery, 2 p.m., Thursday.
