Arthur James Sims was born in 1894 in Nottingham and was the son of Arthur George a bricklayers labourer and Martha Sims née Allsopp Goddard of 50 Upper Eldon Street, Sneinton His father Arthur George was born in 1873 in Nottingham , his mother Martha Allsopp Goddard was born in 1875 also in Nottingham. They were married in 1893 also in Nottingham and went on to have 12 children , sadly three of whom were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Nottingham and were : Arthur James b1894, Frederick b1896, Kate b1898, William b 1900, John b1903, Sarah Ann b1905, Walter b1907, Leslie b1908 and Amy May b1910. In the 1911 census the family are livig at 50 Upper Eldon Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. He married Elizabeth Walsh (born 10th July 1893 ) in 1914 in Nottingham they lived at 2 Carrisbrook Terrace, Turner Street, Nottingham, they had a son John Arhtur born 12th July 1914. Commencing 27th January 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week. Following his death his wife remarried to a Harry Samson in 1919 in Nottingham, and they lived at 7, Carisbrooke Terrace, Turner St., Nottingham.
Lance Corporal Arthur James Sims enlisted in Nottingham and served with 4th Battalion Rifle Brigade. He died of malaria and pneumonia in Carrington Military Hospital on 22nd July 1918 while on home leave from Salonika. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery and commemorated on the Screen Wall.
Obituary, Nottingham Evening Post, 23 July 1918: “SIMS. – Lance-Cpl. Arthur Sims, Rifle Brigade, beloved husband of Elizabeth Sims, who died from pneumonia in military hospital, The great sacrifice. – From his sorrowing wife and little son. Military funeral, Thursday [25th July 1918], General Cemetery.” In memoriam notices published 21st July 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SIMS. – In loving memory of Lce.-Corpl. Arthur Sims, 4th Rifle Brigade, aged 25, who passed away July 21st, 1918, at Carrington Military Hospital, of malaria, after four years' faithful service. His country called, he answered with his life. – Mother, father, sisters, brothers, and sonny. “SIMS. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Lce.-Corpl. Arthur Sims, 4th Rifle Brigade, who died whilst on leave from Salonica, July 21st, 1918. His duty nobly done. – Fred and Beatty. “SIMS. – In loving memory of Lce.-Corpl. A. Sims, Rifle Brigade, who passed away July 21st, 1918.
