Harold Walker was born in 1889 the son of William a corn dealer and Elizabeth Walker (née Key) of 42, Manvers Avenue, Sneinton Hill, Nottingham. William was born in 1856 at Lowdham, Elizabeth in 1859 at North Scarle. Married in 1878 in the Newark area, they had ten children, eight surviving infancy - George William (1879) at Newark, six at Long Bennington - Ellen b.1881, Walter b.1883, Edward b.1885, Alfred b.1887, Harold b.1889, Frances Mary b.1892. Their final child Wilfred Stanley was born in 1900 at Radford. In 1911, the family lived at 30, Massey Street, St Ann’s, Nottingham. Ellen was a machinist embroiderer, Alfred a perambulator painter, Frances Mary a dress maker and Wilfred Stanley was at school. Harold married Annie Cooper (born 2nd July 1890) on 1st March 1915 at All Saints Church, Radford. They lived at 6 Moss Terrace, Rupert Street, Nottingham. With effect from 11/6/1917, Annie was awarded a weekly pension of 13/9d. In 1919, Annie Walker married Alfred Humphrey at Nottingham.
Harold Walker enlisted at Nottingham on 7th December 1906 and served with the Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France on 4th November 1914 and is buried at Ovillers Military Cemetery.
Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour (abridged) 17/9/1917: 'Walker. Missing September 26th 1916 now reported killed in action Private Harold Walker Sherwood Foresters after ten years service aged 28 of 6, Moss Terrace, Rupert Street, Meadows beloved husband of Annie Walker.' Harold’s brother Walter joined the 2/1st Lancashire Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, and following training was drafted to France. In 1917 the battery was involved in fighting in the Ypres Salient and he was wounded and taken to a nearby field ambulance where he died the same day.
