Family History

Joseph was born in 1891 the son of Matthew a lace maker and Eliza Lowe née Walker and the brother of Richard Lowe and ten other siblings to survive infancy. Matthew was born in 1848 at Beeston, Eliza Walker was born in 1853 at Nottingham, married in 1873 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 13 children sadly one died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 153 Birkin Avenue Hyson Green Nottingham, Matthew is 63 yrs and a lace maker, Joseph is 19 yrs and a basket maker.

Military History

Lance Corporal Joseph Lowe enlisted at Nottingham, he was killed in action on 4th August 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium

Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 15/8/1917: 'Lowe. Killed in action July 31st (sic) 1917, Lance Corporal Joseph Lowe aged 26. Broken are our hearts today for the one we loved so dearly has passed away. From his sorrowing mother and sisters and four brothers in France.'
