Joseph was the son of Joseph and Louisa Tacey (née Campion). Joseph snr. was born in Sneinton, birth registered 1865 (J/F/M Radford) and Louisa Campion also in Sneinton in 1868 (J/A/S Nottingham). They were married at Sneinton St Matthias on 22 April 1889 (A/M/J Nottingham) and had four children, one of whom died in infancy or childhood. Their surviving children were: Joseph b. 1889 (J/A/S Nottingham), Emma b. 11 July 1891 (J/A/S Nottingham) and Louisa b. 3 February 1896 (J/F/M Nottingham), who were all born in Sneinton. In 1891 Joseph (26), a framework knitter, and Louisa (23), a lace hand, were living in Sneinton with their son Joseph (1). By 1901 they were living at 5 Harold Hill, Sneinton, with their three children Joseph, Emma (9) and Louisa (5). Joseph was now working in the Great Northern Railway goods' sheds and Louisa was a clipper in the lace trade. Also in the household was a boarder, Arthur Linney (17 b. Sneinton), a frilling machine fitter. The family had moved to 24 Camden Street, Nottingham, by 1911. Joseph was still working for GNR but Louisa was now a lace mender working from home, Joseph jnr. was a labourer at a hide market, Emma a lace clipper and Louisa a hosiery mender. The family later lived at 122 Sneinton Road, Nottingham. Joseph jnr. married Maria Jeffery (prob. b. 1892) in July 1911 (J/A/S Nottingham). His mother Louisa died in 1933 (A/M/J Nottingham) and his father Joseph in 1937 (O/N/D Nottingham). In 1939 when the England and Wales Register was compiled, Joseph's unmarried sisters Emma and Louisa were living at 122 Sneinton Road, Nottingham; Emma was described as a cleaner/household duties and Louisa as a weaver (textile). Also in the household was George William Tacey b. 31 July 1912 (J/A/S Nottingham, mother's maiden name Tacey), who was a wooden box maker. Emma died in 1973 (J/A/S Nottingham) and Louisa in 1983 (O/N/D Nottingham). George William Tacey married in 1949 and died in 1976 (A/M/J Nottingham).
Pte. Tacey was called up for service and following training was drafted to France. His Machine Gun Corps company was involved in fighting during the Third Battle of Ypres and he was killed near Frezenberg on 16 August 1917. Pte. Tracey was buried at the nearby Aeroplane Cemetery (grave ref. VI. C. 40).
