He was the grandson of Ann Stokes. In 1901 they lived at 31 Carlton Road and in 1911 at 21 Lees Hill Street (both Sneinton Nottingham) Walter married Elizabeth Hunt (born 3rd August 1885) in 1913 at Nottingham, they lived at 2 Thoresby Place, Thoresby Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. Commencing 23rd October 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week.
Private Walter Stokes enlisted in Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 16th December 1915 and was killed in action on 14th February 1916, during heavy German shellfire and the explosion of a German mine, prior to the German attack of the front line trenches, near the canal to the south-east of Ypres, Belgium, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial.
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 14th February 1918 reads :- “STOKES. – In loving memory of Pte. W. Stokes, Sherwood Foresters, killed in action February 14th, 1916. Bravely he answered duty's call, now there's nothing to look at but his photo on the wall. – From his sorrowing wife [Elizabeth].” Obituary courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914- 1918.
