Family History

John Henry Hill was born in 1896 at Hucknall and was the son of of James a railway platelayer for the Midland Railway and Selina Hill, née Biddle of 41, Nottingham Road., East Kirkby, Nottinghamshire. His father James was born in 1871 at Annesley and his mother Selina Biddle was born in 1872 at Newcastle, Australia, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 7 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their survinv children were , James William b1892 Hucknall, Enoch Joseph b1894 Hucknall, John Henry b1896 Hucknall, Frederick Roland b1904 East Kirkby, Reginald Arthur b1905 East Kirkby and Leonard b1907 East Kirkby. In the 1911 census the family are living at 41 Nottingham Road, East Kirkby and are shown as James 40 yrs a railway plate layer on the Midland Railway, he is living with his wife Selina 39 yrs and their children, Frederick Roland 7 yrs a scholar, Reginald Arthur 6 yrs and Leonard 4 yrs. In the 1911 census John Henry has left the family home, he is living at the Pinxton Rectory near Alfreton, he is shown as 15 yrs of age a domestic servant, he is living and working for Sidney Coke 53 yrs a clerk in holy orders.

Military History

Private John Henry Hill, enlisted at Hucknall and served with the 1st Battalion Somerset Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the battle of the Somme, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
