Bennett Coyler Knight was born in 1897 in Hucknall and was the son of the late Bennett and Selina Knight (she later remarried to become Selina Brown.) His father, also called Bennett had died during the Boer War campaign and his mother had remarried and lived at 31 Birkland Street, Mansfield.

Military History

Private Bennett Knight enlisted on 29th August 1914 at Mansfield, he gave his age as 19 yrs. He served with the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment and landed in France on 29th July 1915. He died of wounds on 14th July 1916 aged 18 yrs . Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Extra Information

Bennet was born in late 1897 so was not 19 when he enlisted, but only 16, so lied about his age. Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser 09/12/1915: photograph printed address given as 3 Springhill Terrace, Mansfield Woodhouse.
