Henry Lawrence known as Lawrence (his mother’s maiden name ) was born in 1886 the son of William a butcher and Kate (née Lawrence ) Jackson, of Ivy Cottage, Flintham, Newark. William and Kate had 5 children, who were Annie, Edith Kate , Henry Lawrence, Alice Agnes and Elsie Mary. In 1891 the family lived on Main Street Flintham. By 1901 Henry's father William having died, they lived with Kate’s widowed mother Hannah Lawrence Flintham’s sub postmistress. Kate was a music teacher, living with them at this time are Kate's children, 18 year old Edith Kate also a music teacher, Henry Lawrence aged 15 and Elsie Mary aged 7. By 1911 Kate had become the post mistress following the death of her mother. Henry was boarding at 17 Pelham Street Newark with Henry and Elizabeth Aucliffe. Following his death Henry's probate was proven (with will) on 18th January 1916 at Nottingham. His effects of £208 4 shillings and 2 pence were left to Kate Jackson, widow, his mother.
Company Quartermaster Henry Lawrence Jackson, enlisted at Nottingham and served with “C” Company, 9th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He landed in France 15th July 1915 and was killed in action days later on 26th July 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme.
Article published 31st July 1915 in the Nottingham Daily Express :- “AFTER A FORTNIGHT. “West Bridgford Sergeant Killed in Action. “News has just been received of the death at the front of Quartermaster-Sergeant H. L. Jackson, son of the late Mr. Jackson and Mrs. Jackson, of Flintham. “Prior to the outbreak of war Sergeant Jackson, who lived with a brother-in-law at Stratford-road, West Bridgford, was a traveller for the firm of Newball and Mason, Nottingham, but he joined the 9th Northumberland Fusiliers as a private, and obtained his promotion before he actually went out to the trenches. “He had been in France about a fortnight when a shell struck him and killed him. He was a keen cricketer and tennis player.” Death notice published 2nd August 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- JACKSON. — Killed in action, July 26th, Q.M.S. H. L. Jackson, 9th Northumberland Fusiliers, late 39, Stratford-road.
