Family History

Joseph Nichols was born in 1878, the son of the late Thomas a machine fitter and Eliza Nichols née Stokes. Thomas was born in 1856 and Eliza Stokes was born in 1857 both were born at Grantham, married on 9th June 1877 at Spittlegate, Grantham, they went on to have 5 children, sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Beatrice b1885 and Richard b1886. In 1911 the family were living at 5 Little John Terrace Little John Street St Ann's Nottingham. Eliza Nichols 54 yrs is a widow and sewing machinist, she is living with her son Joseph 33 yrs an engine fitter

Military History

Private Joseph Nichols enlisted at Lincoln, he served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 3rd July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
