Joseph Shooter also known as James was born in 1892 at Kirkby in Ashfield and was the son of William a colliery horse keeper and Clara Shooter née Wilson of 69 Skegby Road, Annesley Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire. His father William was born in 1857 at Kirkby in Ashfield and his mother Clara Wilson was born in 1853 at Sheffield, they were married in 1879 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, George b1879, Annie b1882, Sarah b1882, Rebecca b1884, William b1886, Jane b1889, Mary b1890, James b1892 and Harry Shooter b1895, all were born in Kirkby in Ashfield. In the 1911 census the family lived at 69, Skegby Road, Annesley Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire and were shown as William 54 yrs a colliery horseman below ground, he is living with his wife Clara 58 yrs and their children, George 32 yrs a widower a coal miner, William 25 yrs a colliery banksman, James 19 yrs a coal miner, Harry 16 yrs a colliery banksman also living with them are three of their grandchildren, Lilian 10 yrs, Jessie 8 yrs and Ada 5 yrs of age.
Private Joseph Shooter served as James Shooter, he enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Annesley Woodhouse, he initially served with the service number 12679 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on 13th March 1915 whilst serving with the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. Having no known gave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial Panel 8
His brother Private William Shooter enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he died of wounds on 29th April 1917 and is buried at Buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery grave reference 12.A.25 He served as James (CWGC) which was an alias for Joseph (UKSWD, Medal Roll & Soldiers' Effects Register).
