Family History

He was the on of Richard Parkin and Sarah Dickson (later Coupland) of Markham Moor Tuxford Nottinghamshire. The family previously lived at the Bricklayer's Arms Walkeringham.

Military History

Oscar was living at 42 Norfolk Street, Worksop and working as a miner when he took the oath at Newark for the 8th Notts and Derby for 1 years service or the duration of the war. None of these applied as he completed more than a year, (1 year 351 days) and did not see out the duration of the war. He was attested, passed medically fit and embodied into service on the 20th May 1915. He was transferred to the 2/8th Notts and Derby on 13/7/1915 and then posted to 2/5th Notts and Derby 12/2/1917. On the 26th February 1917 he was drafted to France. Oscar was reported “W & M” 5th May 1917 in the field and his body was found near German lines. For official purposes he was reported as killed on or after the 5th May 1917. His personal effect were sent to his mother on the 6th May 1918. Pte. Oscar Dixon, Sherwood Foresters, brother of Mr. Neil Dixon, Norfolk Street, and son of Mrs. Coupland, of the ‘Brick makers Arms’, Walkeringham, formally of Worksop. The deceased was one of five brother’s who enlisted. He formally worked at Shireoaks Colliery, and was very well known in the town. He enlisted in May, 1915, and went to France in January last year. He had also seen service in Ireland. No details as to his death are available. His eldest brother Neil, has been discharged from the Army, another brother, Donald, has been wounded and is now in hospital, and the second Ethelbert, brother is in France. Another son of Mrs. Coupland, Hugh, is a prisoner of war in Germany.
