Family History

Arthur was the son of Peter and Ellen Grantham nee Yardley. Peter Grantham was born and lived in Nottingham and his wife Ellen Yardley was born in Belper, Derbyshire. In 1881 Ellen (25), working as a lace mender, was living at 86 Canal Street, with her uncle and aunt, Lodge and Annie Neale. Peter and Ellen were married in 1884 (J/F/M Nottingham) and had two sons, Joseph and Arthur. In 1891 Peter, Ellen and their first child Joseph were living at 36 Crossland Place, Nottingham. Ten years later in 1901, Peter (40), a bricklayer, and Ellen (42), a plain net mender, and their two sons, Joseph (16), a machine sawyer in a woodyard, and Arthur (8), were still living at the same address. By 1911 the family had moved to 5 Pemberton Street, Leen Side, Nottingham, in the ecclesiastical parish of St John the Baptist. Peter (51) was a bricklayer's labourer while Ellen (54) was no longer working. Joseph was still a wood sawyer while Arthur was now a carter for a coal merchant. Arthur's brother Joseph died at Nottingham on 1 July 1916. His mother Ellen died on 9 August 1923 aged 67 years and his father Peter died on 15 April 1930.

Military History

Arthur served in the 1/5th Lincolnshire Regiment (40212) before transferring to the 2nd Battalion. He died of wounds and is buried in Oxford Road Cemetery (grave ref. V F 16). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Arthur's birth was registered in J/F/M/1893 His age is given as 25 on the family grave and as 27 on the CWGC record. Personal inscription on CWGC headstone: 'A noble life laid down.' Family headstone Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery: 'In loving memory of Joseph the beloved son of Peter & Ellen Grantham who died July 1st 1916 age 33 years. In the midst of life we are in death. Also Arthur, brother of the above who died of wounds in France, Decr 5th 1917, aged 25 (sic) years. Whose soul sweet Jesus have mercy, may they rest in peace. Also of the above Ellen Grantham who died August 9th 1923 aged 67 years. Also of Peter Grantham who died April 15th 1930 aged (-) years. Rest in peace.’ Registers of Soldiers' Effects: Arthur's father, Peter, was his legatee.
