Family History

George Vincent was born in 1886 at Hales, Norfolk and was the son of William a warrener and Annie Elizabeth Vincent née Chester of Thetford, Norfolk. His father William was born in 1859 at Hales, Norfolk and his mother Annie Elizabeth Chester was born in 1865 at Norton, Norfolk, they were married on 7th June 1882 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Hales, Norfolk, they went on to have the following children, William Herbert b1883 Hales, Charles Edward b1884, George b1886 Hales, Mildred Anna b1888 Heckingham, Kate 1889 Heckingham, Alfred b1893 Heckingham, Horace b1894 Heckingham, Jack b1896 Heckingham, Elsie b1898 Heckingham, Helen b1902 West Raynham and Albert b1909 Hilverstone. In the 1911 census the family are living at Norwich Road, Hilverstone, Thetford and are shown as William Vincent 50 yrs a warrener, he is living with his wife Annie 46 yrs and their children, Alfred 18 yrs an estate labourer, Horace 17 yrs a domestic gardener Jack 15 yrs a house boy, Elsie 13 yrs a scholar, Helen 9 yrs a scholar and Albert 2 yrs. George married May Elizabeth Lacey (born 22nd May 1889 Swaffham) on 9th October 1909 at All Saints Church at Croxton, Norfolk. they went on to have the following children, Dorothy Rose born 11th January 1910, Reginald George born 9th February 1913 and Harold James born 5th November 1916 , the family lived at 27 Ivy Cottage, Linby, Nottinghamshire. In the 1911 census George and his family are living at Tollgate Cottage, Thetford, they are shown as George 25 yrs a game keeper, he is living with his wife May 21yrs and their daughter Dorothy 1 year of age. Following his death his widow May was awarded a pension of 2 shillings and 3 pence a week which commenced on 13th August 1917 , she later resided at 4 Pike Lane Thetford Norfolk.

Military History

Private George Vincent attested on 10th December 1915 at Hucknall he gave his address as Ivy Cottage, Linby, his age as 29 yrs and 11 months, he was a game keeper and his next of kin was his wife May of the same address. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 2nd June 1916 at Derby. On 6th June 1916 was posted to the 4th battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. Embarking from Devonport on 16th September 1916 he disembarked at Basra on 15th October 1916. He was killed in action on the 25th January 1917, whilst serving with the 7th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, as Allied forces advanced along the Tigris valley and attempted to recapture Amara from the Turkish Garrison. He is buried in Amara War Cemetery Grave Reference: 17 C 10

Extra Information

His brother Private Alfred Chester Vincent enlisted in the Coldstream Guards at Derby in Aug/Sept 1914. He was killed in action on 15th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme France. Article published 7th March 1917 in the Nottingham Daily Express :- “By the loss of Private George Vincent in the recapture of Kut, Linby has sustained its second casualty. The fallen soldier, who was formerly a gamekeeper on the Montagu estates, had only been in the Army nine month.
