Leslie Stray Hickman was born in 1899 the son of Arthur Hickman a coal miner and Caroline Hickman (née Buckle). His father was born in 1848 at Wymondon Leicestershire, his mother in 1852 at Exton Rutland. Married in 1870 in the Oakham Registration District, they had two other children Mary Elizabeth b.1871 Exton and Sarah Jane b.1873 Wymondon. Leslie’s father died in 1902 at Nottingham aged fifty. His mother married Thomas Stray who died in 1906 aged sixty three. Leslie lived in 1891 at 14 Reigate Street Basford, in 1901 at 12 Silverdale Road and in 1911 at 22 Goodhall Street Hyson Green (all Nottingham).
Leslie Stray Hickman enlisted on 21st August 1915 at Nottingham giving his age as nineteen years and one month (he was actually sixteen). He had served with 7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters for 133 days when he was discharged on 31st December under King’s Regulation 392, knowingly making a mis-statement as to age on enlistment. Later he re- enlisted at Nottingham and served with the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 13th August 1918 and is buried at Le Grand Hasford Military Cemetery Grave Reference: Plot 1 Row E Grave 13
His birth was registered J/A/S/1899 so he may have been 19 when killed.
