George was born in 1886 the son of George an iron merchant and Harriett Clarke (née Fearn). His father was born in 1859 at Castle Donnington, his mother Harriett in 1863 at Derby. Married in 1883 at Nottingham, they had eleven children. Six of George’s siblings survived infancy: Louise b.1884, Rose b.1890, Albert b.1893, Mary Ann b.1899, Herbert b.1903 and Joseph Edward b.1907. In 1901 they lived at 12 Foundry Yard, in 1911 at 21 Knotted Alley Leen Side and later at 10 Eugene Street Crocus Street Meadows (all Nottingham).
George Clarke enlisted at Nottingham and served with the Sherwood Foresters 2/5th Battalion before being transferred to the 1st Battalion. He died of dysentery whilst a prisoner of war. Tincourt New British Cemetery Grave Reference: IX E 16
Nottingham Evening Post 10/2/1919: “CLARKE. – Died August 5th, 1918, in hospital, of dysentery, at Tincourt, while prisoner of war, Pte. George Clarke, aged 32, eldest son of George and Harriet Clarke, 10 Eugene-street.
